Block placement issue

When I hold down the place button on my PC, for example iron, which doesn't do anything. But then while still holding the iron and the place button, I switched my inventory using the hotkeys to a poppy which should place. Instead it just shows a image of it being placed but still being in my inventory and not placed. While holding the iron in my hand the whole time.
