Render distance limited to 20 chunks

My render distance was set at 32 from previous versions, but when I went into settings and looked, the slider was all the way to the left, saying 32. When I changed it, the scale only went from 6 to 20 and now I can't get it back to 32. Disappointing because some of my map depended on the 32 chunk render.
