Minecraft crashes on startup

The app starts and shows the Mojang logo, then the screen goes blank and white, then Minecraft crashes after the app asks for permission to show notifications. Approving notifications and restarting crashes at the same time point.  The behaviour is the same with a new install and existing installing.
