Tamed donkey with saddle and filled chest tied to fence disappeared.

My tamed donkey which had been equipped with a saddle and a chest filled with paper was not tied to the fence anymore although the lead was still on the fence and it was not anywhere in my compound. I had left the area and traveled to through nether portals.
