No wooden tools when crafting -

Samsung Galaxy Note 2
OS 4.1.2

Very near beginning of game; Survival
Everything works fine.
But I can't ever make more than sticks and planks; no wooden tools offered (not even grey).
Mining rocks gives me no drops.

How to Trigger:
I cut trees, get wood, make planks.
Make sticks
make crafting table & put it down & stand by it.

.. nothing changes.
The crafting menus don't change, there's not even tools greyed out.
My weapons menu is:
Flint and Steel
Shears
Torch
Torch

Also - harvesting:
I can harvest dirt, gravel and wood. Not stone.
I think I need a wood pick to do that?
Can't make one.

Uninstall, Reinstall - my old data still there.
Clear Data, Uninstall
Reboot.
Download, reinstall... my data still there.
