Suffocation in Nether portals in multiplayer

I was playing with my brother on a survival world owned by me, but when he tried to come back from the nether, he suffocated while on his screen, it was still the loading screen. I could get to and from the nether just fine. The only way he could've survived was if he tried to move as soon as he got teleported.
