mcfunction files

I have found the .mcfunction files. I have found online info that says these files can be open by text reader programs, such as Notepad.  My language for Minecraft is English. When I open a .mcfunction file in Notepad, I see uninterpretable symbols, numbers, characters!  What do  I need, in order for this files to be readable when opened???
