Jitter/freeze when applying Chroma Hills HD Texture Pack

When applying the texture pack Chroma Hills HD, the game jitters/freezes. It takes about three reboots of the game to forcibly have the 'global resources reset'.

 

Things tried:
Uninstalled Minecraft. Reboot phone. Reinstall Minecraft. Reinstall texture pack.

 

Apply different texture pack. (That works)

 

The first time this started happening was after the 1.12 update. I have had issues with this pack before now, but it was just the pack. But I can't even open a menu. It just freezes and jitters when applied.

 

For reference, my phone is a PocophoneF1

SD 845

6GB RAM

128 GB storage (28~GB avail)

still not sure what the problem is when it had previously been working.
