Went down an elevator, crashed then died

I was just using an elevator in one of my worlds (one which has water at the bottom then a sign) then I crashed. There was another player in my world who saw I died. When I relaunched my world, my inventory was empty and I spawned by my bed. Clearly, I had died but when I went to the bottom of my elevator, there was nothing at the bottom.

 

I had no lava or cacti etc at the bottom of my elevator that would make the items despawn. As soon as Minecraft crashed, I relaunched my world as soon as possible.
