Trident Disappears When Thrown at Player With Shield

My trident had riptide 3 on it along with unbreaking 3. I had my friend test it and throw it at me whilst crouching with a shield in my off-hand. He threw it and it disappeared. I think it might have bounced off the shield and went into the ground but we dug forever and couldn't find it.
