Eating while going through a Nether Portal takes you to the same coordinates that you had while in the overworld

While eating and traveling in a nether portal, I was at about X 11,000 Z 9400 in the overworld, when I went through the Nether portal expecting to go back to my portal 8 times smaller than where’s I currently was. I instead was spawned at X 11,000 Z 9400 in the nether too, with no nether portal to go back through.
