Local multiplayer non-host inventory loss

im having issues using local multiplayer regarding total lose of inventory, location, permission, and spawn point data. When i rejoin the game i am set back to world spawn as if i were a new player. I can tell because i am given a map, and my dogs and cats no longer respond  to my command, as if they werent mine. i lost an entire set of enchanted diamond armor, sword, pickaxe, bow, fishing rod and trident.
