Unable to mine or attack anything in any world

I can place blocks, open chest and doors and use the crafting table but I can't mine or attack anything in any of my worlds. My mouse is working fine and I have tried in survival, creative, as a member and operator. I've tried reloading the game and restarting my computer but it still doesn't seem to work. There's no animation for when I press those buttons, it's like it doesn't respond at all.
