Sound effects not going off

Some sound effects in my game aren't going off like they should. I have noticed that whenever I hit and kill mobs, they don't make noise. When I open and close a chest, it doesn't make noise; and when I walk on blocks, it makes the same footstep sound. It is all very weird to me, and this started happening out of nowhere. If you guys could help, it would be greatly appreciated!
