Vilagers spawn in the jungle causes the game to crash or make the controls disappear

Spawning in a jungle and spawning villagers causes the game to crash or make the controls disappear. Sometimes the game does not crash but it then makes the item selection, controls, and the pause menu to disappear, only showing the shadow of the player and the villager.
