Minecraft v1.11.4 iOS crash without internet

After previously signing into Xbox Live, when I attempt to launch Minecraft PE it crashes several second after the Minecraft menu appears when there is no internet connectivity. The issue is reproduced on both iPhone and iPad while in airplane mode.
