Can't turn Spawners Off

Just downloaded the updated (I had been player today prior to update), I had several spawners (zombie and skeleton) that I had turned off with lighting (torches) while I worked on structures around them. Since the update I can not get them to stop spawning no matter how many torches I place around them.
