Ender pearl in end city portal teleports player to a void

Traveling to the end, and throwing a pearl in to an end city portal, teleported me to a black void. Couldn't move, or place blocks. After I quit the game, It will not re-load. It broke the whole world save. I was lucky I had a duplicate save, but now I'm afraid to try it again.
