Can't toggle Instant respawn in survival

I cannot toggle Instant respawn when on my Minecraft world. If I click the instant respawn option on the pause menu, all it does is say "unknown command gamerule. Please check to see if the command exists and if you have permission to use it." If this Is not a bug, I'm sorry.
