iPad automatically updated Minecraft version 1.9 and Minecraft crashes after loading

Using iPad 2 with Minecraft PE, which automatically updated to 1.9 earlier this week.  Minecraft now crashes after loading, once play begins.  Changes made are not saved before the crash
