a nether portal glitch

I was playing Minecraft and I went to the nether,I went through and I did my thing and I went back,when I went through the portal I ended up in a compleatly different portal that I had never seen. I had to build a stair case up to the ocean and get out. I drowned losing all of my amazing armor and sword!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
