Placing Water blocks on the back of stairs

When placing a water block on the back of a stair block i lose the water in my bucket but do not place the water (or visibly place it) however i can pick the invisible water back up to refill my bucket. I can place water within the same empty block by right clicking on an adjacent block that is not the stair block.

I know not the biggest bug but....
