Fall to death when logging in and losing everything

It's quite frustrating to log into minecraft and find myself in the clouds falling to my inevitable

death. I have lost all my hard earned items from several deaths now, I can't seem to get above level 20-30 when I find myself dying from this. If 'death from falling from a high spot' happens withing seconds of login, is there any way to make a fix where inventory  and ones current level isn't lost on respawn? 

I can store everything in a chest before logging off but losing those levels repeatedly is frustrating. I did a search for current issues and did not see this being one.
