Fake world border?

Playing in pure survival, I had this one occurrence where there was a force field or something that prevented me from going past that. It was on Z: 256 and I wasn't able to go through it. I had a friend playing at the time and they could pass it. Anything before 256 wouldn't update and could not be interacted with me. It started from Z: 256 and went in a negative direction (Towards Z:0 and beyond into the Z negatives). 

I got past the force field by right clicking on a horse while it was past the Z: 256 force field, but I couldn't move or ride the horse after that. The horse was stuck in the damaged color, and some blocks were broken but not updated on my side.

I can not reproduce this, if there is anything I can provide, let me know.
