Turning off then turning on Fancy Graphics crashes the game

I turned off some of the graphics options like smooth lighting, beautiful skies, fancy graphics etc. to use a higher render distance and when I went back to turn them all back on the other features were turned on except fancy graphics, which when I tried to use kept crashing my game.
