The Wither is broken

I summoned a wither underground, after I shot it down to half health with bow and arrow I went to town with my sword only to be unable to kill it once it reached zero health. I even brought another set of diamond gear and a diamond sword and multiple hits wouldn't kill it despite having litteraly 0 health even before I started hitting it. The wither simply can't die
