Zombie Pigmen not spawning in nether portals

I have not seen a zombie pigman spawn in the overworld.  I have a nether portal close to my house (so normally within the simulation distance) and this has never spawned a zombie pigman.  I have also built some very large nether portals (see attached picture), which should spawn pigmen quite fast.  However, these have also been barren.
