Intense glitches when underwater using a conduit -don't know if the conduit is part of the reason or not

When I'm out of the water, everything is fine, but when I enter the water a few visual glitches happen in succession: 

a) it appears as if there's no water

b) everything is normal but the unloaded area has a strange coloured chunk border (I think)

c) everything goes pitch black but the weird unloaded chunk colour thing. 

The two colours I noticed the unloaded chunks turned were blue and red (shown in pictures attached)

When I get out of the water, everything is fine

I was also using a conduit, there was a large amount of kelp in front of me, I was playing by myself, and I was listening to the game through earphones (if either of these four things has anything to do with the glitch)

After staying in the water for a while, the game slowed down and froze; when I quit the game and started the world again, everything was working normally again.

Several days (human, not minecraft) before I noticed this glitch, there were weird ghost block things that appeared when I broke/placed kelp, I could still interact with the kelp fine, it was just a visual glitch

I think these two glitches were completely unrelated
