can't take out or put in items in a furnace

When i go into the furnace I can't take out my coal it won't allow me to click on the box for coal it will allow me to put in items but not coal and i can't get items out of the box after its done cooking but if i destory the furnace it gives me my items but no longer allows me to put in items
