When lead breaks it still shows up

Recently I've noticed that when you lead a mob and the lead breaks,  it still appears to be attached to that mob. I've only tested a few mobs, but so far it only seems to affect the horse and donkey in survival. In creative mode the lead took forever to break but it still disappeared correctly.
