Minecraft closes when 'esc' is pressed within 5 seconds of world gen

If I press 'esc' within a few seconds of world gen, everything works (HUD disappears, etc.) up to the point that the pause menu appears. At that point, my cursor is still locked and the crosshair is still on screen, but there is no not responding message, thereby meaning it's not a Windows issue, but a MC issue.
