Sheep won't eat wheat and therefore can't breed

I entered the end to collect some shulker shells and when I came back, many of my sheep were out of their pen. When I came and tried to breed them, they follow me with wheat but they won't eat it. My friend was working on a wool structure so that may have something to do with the broken sheep.
