Blocks disappearing when using items.

I was digging underground and placed torches in a cave system. After a certain point, I tried placing a torch but the block disappeared and made a hole. I continued "placing" torches but the stone would just disappear and a torch would remain in my inventory. I managed to "dig" straight through bedrock down to Y coordinate 1. I go back where I came from and can place torches normally but I'm assuming in this one chunk it just deletes blocks with no digging animation.
