Nametags not working as they should

When I try to name my pets with a nametag, I press name but nothing happens except my nametag disappears from my inventory. When my friend joins in the game, he can see the named animal but I can't. Am I doing anything wrong? I fish up a nametag, name it in an anvil and name the animal. I was able to see them before, but I cant anymore.
