Can't join multiplayer worlds

My sister and I are trying to join each others worlds but we cannot.  After a while it just says "Unable to connect to world".  We are both friends on Xbox but we cannot join.  We are on Minecraft 1.5.0 and it just won't work.  Not sure if it's a personal problem.
