All mobs that attack in melee mode will not attack you if they are on top of half blocks

Half blocks I say yes slabs but also chests, carpets, top snow, trapdoors, end portal, enchantment table and possibly other blocks that are not the same size as the normal blocks.

For mobs that attack in melee mode like all types of zombies, spiders, vindicators, dolphins, drowned, silverfish, endermite, enderman, blaze, wither skeleton
