Unable to smelt: furnace refuses fuel

Since buckets of water was released, I wanted to make a fountain in my world made of stone half slabs. But when I tried to smelt Cobblestone in regular stone, the furnace would not let me put in coal nor remove the cobblestone. All 3 of my furnaces did this.
