Suffocating in End Gateway Portal

Defeated the Ender Dragon for a third time, and when attempting to go through the newly generated portal, I get stuck inside and suffocate. Sometimes Im able to toss an ender pearl back out or jump out but this doesnt always work. The other two portals work fine.
