Hand must be empty to open door or chest

If I was holding anything in my hand (no empty inventory slots) door would not open. If I threw an item door would open so I could enter. If I tried to open a chest to empty a slot, chest would not open if anything was held in hand. If I threw an item and switched to an empty hand, I could open the chest. I tried changing type of door (two types of wood), moving the location of the door, and reinstalling the game.
