Minecraft pocket edition furnace

When playing minecraft on my iPhone 4, I cannot use the furnace properly ever since the latest update, I can put stuff to get smelted in the top and that's it I cannot do anything else, I cannot add coal or charcoal and cannot get my already smelted stuff out
Please fix as it is really hard to play the game like this
