Inconsistency in /kill commands when applied to bosses

When I use /kill to kill Wither boss, its bossbar shows that it still has half health and it dies and drop its loot; and when I use /kill to kill the ender dragon, it just disappear completely with no trace (no death animation) and no loot (xp).
