Mining does not produce blocks for pickup

Since updating to 1.2.9 and activating the coordinates in a current survival game, when mining it produces no blocks to pickup. So like when digging into cobblestone for example, I can dig but no cobblestone blocks are produced, so I cannot pick any up.

Interestingly, killing animals or zombies/skeletons etc does produce meat/bones etc.

Very frustrating!
