Furness only smelts 4 blocks

I fill all my furnesses up to smelt cobble stone and leave it for over 30mins while building but when I come back and open the furnesses they have only smelted 4 blocks each and then continue to smelt while I'm interacting with the furnesses. Bottom line is that the furnesses only smelt 4 blocks while they are left alone.
