Minecart stops at end of track instead of falling

Instead of jumping over a section of track that ends at a precipice, the minecart stops and hangs in the air. This behavior only happens when the cart's motion is started by a button. If the minecart is started manually, it jumps as expected. I have attached a picture of the cart hanging.
