Missing Damage Hearts Particle Effect

On the old console version of Minecraft. Hitting mobs made reddish brown heart particle effects appear to show damage being done through melee attacks. These damage particles, not to be confused with the bright red heart particles from feeding animals, appear to be missing, and I can't find a way to get them back.
