Redstone Mansion lever not working

On the Redstone Mansion adventure, I can not place the lever on the red block which is the 2nd objective on the 1st puzzle. Since I am unable to place the lever on the block, I can not open the door to get out. I have even tried completing the other puzzles first and have tried quit & save and then reopening the game.
