Cannot add fuel to the furnace

What I expected to happen was to open the furnace and a create an object...:

What actually happened was I was able to open the furnace, but the box for adding fuel is frozen. I cannot add fuel. I can add ingredients to the top box, but nothing is created ...:

3. ...Boxes for adding ingredients are locked (frozen) up
