Mule goes through fence and/or blocks

Try to breed a mule in my horse farm, but the mule keeps escaping through the fence, tried surrounding fence with blocks and same thing, tried doubling blocks for a two block thick wall (3 high) and the mule suffocates, wasted over 30 nuggets trying to get a mule
