Straight redstone connecting to piston issues

Place a repeator powered block with redstone on top, and straighten the redstone towards the repeater by placing a piston in front of the redstone, if you place a block beside to the straight redstone, then it will power the block. I'm not certain straight redstone is supposed to power the block beside it..
