pigmen aggressive without being provoked

On two separate occasions in two different areas of the nether (accessed via different portals) I was attacked and killed by pigmen. They were not provoked in any way by me or other mobs. Normally I would not expect to be attacked unless I attacked or accidentally hit them first.
